Romblon

The Strangest Nudibranchs: A Photographer’s Dream!

Romblon is one of the world’s meccas for Macro diving, along with Anilao, Lembeh, Tulaben, or Dauin. It is also a popular spot for underwater photographers who come from all over the world to capture images of nudibranchs, especially those from the Butterfly family: Nigra, Elegant, sp…etc

You can also find almost all Pygmy seahorses here: Bargibanti, Denise, Pontohi, but also the very rare Severnsi or the Lembeh Sea dragon.

The province of Romblon is located at the end of the Verde Island Passage between Luzon and the Visayas islands. It is not only at the geographical center of the Philippines but also at the “center of the center of biodiversity””.

Romblon Island is no more than 50 square kilometers and is renowned for its authentic charm and warm inhabitants.

Far from mass tourism, this small island is not lacking in charm. It is bordered by immense white sandy beaches, all deserted (except on weekends, as locals also like to enjoy their beautiful beaches).

In the center of the island, between green hills and rice paddies, you will find numerous marble workshops along the roads. The island is known throughout the Philippines for this particular wealth; it is rich in marble, especially white marble. You’ll find it everywhere in hotels in the form of tables, sometimes immense, benches, and various statues. It’s when you think about bringing back a souvenir that things get complicated… Marble is very, very heavy, and even the smallest sculpture will weigh several kilograms in your luggage.

Until now, only a few divers have visited Romblon Island. But most of them, like me, return regularly. Why?

Simply because it is home to an unprecedented and extremely rare Macro and Super Macro fauna, whether it’s the holy grail of nudibranchs, the Melibe Colemani, or the entire family of butterfly Nudis (Cyerce Sp), all species of Pygmy seahorses, and an incalculable number of rare crustaceans found nowhere else!

The best season runs from October to May/June. Although Romblon is diveable year-round, in summer you will likely have rain, sometimes a lot, but mainly in the evenings!
The boats used are traditional Bancas. Our partner club The Three P. The guides (Spotters) are of very good quality, comparable to what you find in Lembeh, Anilao, or Tulamben. The boat crews are accustomed to handling photo equipment with the necessary delicacy. The dive sites are between 15 and 20 minutes away by boat. Surface intervals are most often spent on a beach, like Bonbon Beach, a superb place to relax.
But be warned, this is primarily a destination reserved for photographers and biodiversity enthusiasts.
